For the Betterment of Society
In the modern world there are a myriad of pressing issues and concerns. These can include environmental catastrophes, economic crises, epidemics, polarization, and much more. The UN has published a list of current global issues on their webpage which can be found here. The present issues are so varied and complex that it can be intimidating to approach any one of them. Despite this, there is a kind of obligation for humanity to promote social wellness and to help others. I describe this obligation as a call to be involved in the betterment of society and humankind.
The betterment of society means doing that which is best for society. What is best for society is not just what is best for a few, but for all. Although clearing a local forest may bring economic benefit to a few, it's long term negative effect on others outweighs the benefit. In short, doing what is best for society means seriously considering how your actions will affect another person.
There are many ways to promote social wellness and to aid in the betterment of humankind. Often, these actions do not have be on a grandiose scale. I am a firm believer that small and simple actions can bring to pass great things. At the smallest scale, it can be as simple as bringing treats to a neighbor, donating to a homeless shelter, or picking up trash at a nearby park. These small actions are important, in fact essential to the betterment of society.
Like many others, I have felt the call to improve the world we live in and to help others. I see the world as a beautiful creation of God. I want to do everything I can to preserve that beauty and make the world better. For myself, that means taking small and simple actions to help others. Often this takes the form of spending time with those who are lonely, calling a family member, or allowing someone to share their emotions. My efforts often involve one on one interactions between myself and another. It is no coincidence that I have chosen to go into the field of counseling.
My sphere of influence may be small, but combined with the efforts of millions, if not billions of others, I can contribute to changing the world for the better. Even if it appears to be miniscule, I have a role to play in the betterment of society and humankind.
